HOW TO OBSERVE FLUORESCENCE IN FLUORESCENT ROCKS AND MINERALS

DO NOT STAIR INTO A GERMICIDAL LAMP.  STARING INTO A 255 nm LAMP FOR MORE THAN A HALF MINUTE WILL CAUSE, AT LEAST, SEVERE PAIN AND INFECTION, AND WILL CAUSE BLINDNESS FOR GREATER LENGTHS OF TIME
I learned the hard way; never do it!

There are three types of ultraviolet lamps that are necessary for observing the fluorescence of a specimen.  They are a follows:

  • A 365 nm electromagnetic frequency lncandscent lamp.
  • A fluorescent type of fluorescent lamp with a frequency less than 365 nm, but not as short as 255 nm
  • A germicidal lamp with a frequency of 255 nm
A incandescent lamp will become very hot.  Do not handle it until it cools off.

Fluorescent rocks and minerals will fluoresce at one of these frequencies.  So, try all three.

Good luck!
